Our Story

Alice’s Living Legacy, Inc. is named after Alice Lucinda Lipkins, who arrived in San Francisco in the 1960s with her two young sons. She came from a large family with 23 siblings and never met a stranger. Alice had a compassionate open heart and would feed and house anyone with a dire need. Her home was referred to by the neighborhood kids as “the Center,” and all were welcome there. She studied bookkeeping and theology in college and went on to be treasurer at her church and work in public service first in the San Francisco Public Transportation Department and later in the San Francisco Unified School District, where she encouraged and guided middle school and high school students. She passed away in 2019 leaving behind 5 children (two are pastors), 8 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, 3 goddaughters, 10 siblings, and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. Her only daughter, Detra, founded Alice’s Living Legacy in her mother’s honor and with an intention to provide that same warm welcome and acceptance her mother offered year after year.

Our Vision

At Alice’s Living Legacy we envision a San Franciso County where young adults aging out of foster care are met with a welcoming community of mentors and peers, that nurture their independence, while helping them move into stable housing, complete their education goals, and identify and work in a job they are passionate about. We envision a community where they feel “a part of” rather than “apart from,” and where they feel safe, happy, healthy, connected, valued, welcomed, wanted, needed, seen, accepted, and understood. We envision a world where they no longer feel lost, because together we have created a community where they truly belong.
